Sentinus has developed a programme to help young people understand the impact of climate change on our world.
The programme will be aimed at P6 or P7 classes and give young people an understanding of the role our planet’s atmosphere plays in regulating our weather and climate and learn what gives us our seasons. It will help them understand the difference between weather and climate and introduce them to the concept of climate change caused by global warming and its causes and effects, including how human activity is changing the composition of Earth’s atmosphere.
Pupils will:
- discuss weather and climate and complete some observation tasks;
- see demonstration illustrating what causes our seasons;
- carry out experiment to prove the green house effect, using simple resources;
- explore the carbon cycle;
- explore the sources of greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide, methane, water vapour;
- examine how global warming is expressed (climate change, rising sea levels, species displacement, ocean acidification etc);
- explore the impact of the melting of land based ice versus that of sea ice;
- discuss how we can reduce production of greenhouse gases.
If your school is an Eco School completing this programme will contribute to the following Eco School topics: climate action, biodiversity, energy, global perspective, healthy living, litter, marine, outdoor learning, transport, waste & water.
